Every year, World Wetlands Day is celebrated on 2 February. This day marks the date of the adoption of the Convention on Wetlands on 2 February 1971, in the Iranian city of Ramsar on the shores of the Caspian Sea.
Since 1997, the Ramsar Secretariat has provided outreach materials to help raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.

Wetlands are rich with biodiversity and are a habitat for a dense variety of plant and animal species. The latest estimates show a global decline of biodiversity, while wetlands are disappearing three times faster than forests.
“Wetlands and biodiversity ”, the theme for WWD 2020, aims to highlight wetland biodiversity, its status, and why it matters, and to promote actions to reverse its loss. World Wetlands Day 2020

The theme of 2020 is “The importance of wetlands in biodiversity”. Wetlands have a great deal of biodiversity and are suitable for growing animal and plant species. As part of the World Wetlands Day Poster, it is mentioned that the life of the earth creature’s flourishes in the wetlands.

Up-to-date statistics show that wetland biodiversity has declined dramatically worldwide. Wetlands disappear three times faster than forest destruction. World Wetlands Day 2020

Official Wetland Base has called on all people around the world to plan occasions that raise public awareness and provide appropriate wetland education in the classroom for children. Some programs were organized in Iran to commemorate World Wetlands Day and the importance of wetlands in the environment.
